Silver Candlesticks

Silver candlesticks are an iconic part of Shabbat tableware and are ideal for ritual Shabbat candle lighting. Jewish families have used silver candlesticks for centuries, perhaps even millennia to mark the arrival of Shabbat and to add a warm, homely light to the dinner table.

Today, sterling silver candlesticks are one of the bestselling items of Judaica and are a perfect wedding present for any Jewish couple. Modern silver candlesticks and vintage silver candlesticks come in a variety of styles and sizes, and can be bought as sets, or as candelabra. Even a simple set of candlesticks and beeswax candles can transform the ambience of a room.

If you want to buy sterling silver candlesticks online, or learn more about the Shabbat candle lighting rituals, Nadav Art are the experts. Our handmade Judaica is the product of generations Jewish silversmithing traditions and specialist experience. Every silver candlestick and silver candlestick holder is crafted in the family workshop in historic Jerusalem, just a short walk from the Wailing Wall.

What is the Difference Between Silver Candlesticks and Shabbat Candlesticks?

There is no real difference between silver candlesticks and Shabbat candlesticks. It’s simply that most Jewish families only light candles for Shabbat and Jewish holidays. It’s convenient to call the silver candlesticks Shabbat Candlesticks.

There’s not religious or ritual significance to the candlesticks themselves, it’s the ritual lighting of the Shabbat candles that has religious and cultural significance. You could just as easily use the candlesticks for an intimate romantic dinner or to add some atmosphere to a room – or even to get through a power cut!

Vintage Silver Candlesticks

Vintage silver candlesticks are made in a variety of ancient styles and designs. Many are inspired by museum pieces and even by archaeological finds. Vintage can also include the styles of silver candlesticks seen on the sumptuous banqueting tables of the belle epoque and earlier periods.

Some of our favorite vintage silver candlesticks are based on ancient Jewish designs and are decorated with polished onyx and Israeli gemstones like amethysts, lapis and emeralds. Vintage candlesticks also recreate ancient Jewish designs with handcrafted Yemenite silver filigree decoration.

Modern Silver Candlesticks

Modern silver candlesticks come in as many different styles and designs as their vintage counterparts. They tend to be more minimalist in design and the silversmiths live to explore less conventional shapes, including industrial style cylindrical designs, wavy or contorted styles and other interesting experiments with size and proportion.

Decorations for modern silver candlesticks often include brightly colored enamel inlays, silver solder motifs, silver beading and stamping. Sterling silver can look especially attractive when it receives a hammered finish. Hammered silver candlesticks tend to catch and reflect the light, creating a unique shimmer.

Solid Silver Candlesticks

Solid silver candlesticks are a real luxury item. Many – perhaps most – handmade silver candlesticks feature a hollow center to make them lighter and more affordable. If you want to buy solid silver candlesticks, it’s worth speaking directly to Nadav Art and exploring the possibility of personalized or custom designed candlesticks.

Sterling Silver Candle Holders

Candle holders is another slightly confusing term that’s worth quickly explaining. Sterling silver candle holders can be purpose built silver stands or frames (usually exquisitely decorated) to hold small candles like tea lights or night lights, or sometimes memorial candles. They are sometimes crafted into an ornate tripod form, or a silver beaker design. Some people just refer to candlesticks as candle holders too.

Candle holders can also be polished silver trays that hold silver candlesticks. Apart from looking amazing on your Shabbat table, they catch any dripping wax and protect your tablecloth. A set of simple silver candlestick holders can really add a special touch to your Shabbat dinner. Most people opt for a minimalist design when they buy sterling silver candlestick holders. A subtle band of silver beading is often the only decoration that you’ll need.

If you are a big fan of elaborate ornamentation, you should check out our silver trays with leaf and tree decorations. Our craftsman used all their skill to create wonderfully lifelike silver foliage, rising up from silver candlestick holder trays. These trays are a unique example of creative modern Judaica.

How to Clean and Polish Sterling Silver Candlesticks

When you buy sterling silver candlesticks or solid silver candlesticks, you’ll receive brand new gleaming silverware. Obviously, you’ll want to keep it in its original pristine condition – especially if you are planning a special Shabbat dinner or a family meal for the Jewish holidays. There are two main issues with 925 sterling silver candlesticks. The first is that they will naturally tarnish, the second is that they will collect wax.

How to Polish 925 Sterling Silver Candlesticks

925 sterling silver was formulated by expert metallurgists to be robust enough for daily use. You can clean it quite vigorously with any commercial silver cleaner or polish and it will buff up to a gleaming shine. You can buy a cleaner in your local hardware store or supermarket. There are also special cloths for polishing silver, but unless you’re cleaning an entire banquet set, an old soft rag is usually good enough.

If you find that you have dripped wax on your silver candlesticks or holders, you can remove it easily enough. The easiest way is to chip the wax off with any utensil that has a fine wooden or plastic edge. If you have a candlestick with intricate silver filigree work, or detailed ornamentation, a cocktail stick can work well. If necessary, place the candlestick in a plastic bag in the freezer for 15 minutes. The frozen wax should chip right off the silver.
